Having SAVED the remaining artifacts of the Charles Van Damme from demolition we are currently raising funds to RESTORE the 100yr old artifacts and EXHIBIT them as a monument in the Waldo Point State mandated park at Waldo Point Harbor in Sausalito.

THE CHARLIE MERRILL

Building the memorial Swampscott dory
The RBMA contracted with the Sausalito Northbay Boatworks to build a wooden, 17 foot rowing and sailing Swampscott Dory to honor the life of RBMA co-founder, Charlie Merrill and his dedication to the Sausalito waterfront community. The Charlie Merrill is the first of a class of dories built in Sausalito for sailing on the bay. The overall cost of the project was $10,000. The RBMA donated $1500 toward the purchase of building materials and the remainder of the money came from community donations.
Once we have established a rowing and sailing program for the Charlie Merrill, it will be available for public rental. This rental income will keep our Charlie Merrill ship shape for years to come.  learn more
The following donors have made contributions in excess of $500 and their names have been engraved on a bronze plaque which is attached to the interior of the transom. Thanks to everyone's generous enthusiasm and support!

BARRY HIBBEN.

MEMORIAL ANCHOR AT DUNPHY PARK
Barry Hibben was the founder of the RBMA but was also instrumental in the cleanup and development of Sausalito's Dunphy Park. To commemorate his achievments, the RBMA will be installing a memorial anchor in Dunphy Park along with an inscription. We are currently in the process of locating a large memorial anchor to serve this purpose. If anyone has such an anchor that they wish to donate, please contact us. We promise to give it a place of honor within our community.

MUSEUM

Picture
NAUTICAL LIBRARY $ RESOURCE CENTER.
The Richardson's Bay Maritime Association (RBMA) is in the process of acquiring the Butler Building on the Sausalito waterfront for the site of a Sausalito maritime museum and resource center.  This center will include a library, a collection of local maritime artifacts, a support center for local shipwrights and a wooden boat shop where demonstrations and classes can take place. The RBMA would also like to have a fleet of wooden rowing and sailing dories available for rent at this location. The Charlie Merrill Project will provide us with our first community boat. Below is a sketch of our new headquarters at Liberty Street.

PORT BAKER PROJECT:

Picture
FOCUS ON WATERFRONT PRESERVATION.
The area of Fort Baker in and around Horseshoe Bay on the North end of the Golden Gate Bridge is referred to as “Port Baker.”  Since most of the focus of the NPS reports on Fort Baker is on the upland portion of the property, the Richardson Bay Maritime Association (RBMA) has undertaken a volunteer effort to focus on the waterfront portion.  Extensive research and many discussions with interested groups have resulted in this study and its recommendations.
The RBMA has approached this effort with the following objectives:
To preserve and enhance the existing uses and activities that are water oriented and public serving.
To propose new uses and activities that can enhance the public’s use and enjoyment of the waterfront portion of Fort Baker.

Keep the preserved and new uses accessible to all members of the community, including those outside the local area.
Offer educational displays that present and interpret the history of Fort Baker and the maritime heritage of Horseshoe Bay.
Foster and maintain at Port Baker the skills and knowledge of the maritime trades

 WORKSHOPS

Our first community workshop spawned a number of other "mini-workshops" within our community . We have met with civic leaders, land owners and shipwrights who offer insights and ideas to further our cause. The RBMA is open to working with anyone whose purpose and goals are aligned with ours.

EARL GATES LECTURE SERIES

This lecture series is made possible by a grant from the Earl Gates Foundation. The Richardson's Bay Maritime Association (RBMA) has presented speakers from different arenas of the maritime community. From Harold Sommer's and the Wanderbird to actual accounts of coastguard rescues, our lectures are educational and entertaining.
